I’ve been shooting weddings for nearly 8 years now. I started out while studying a Visual Communications Degree at Stellenbosch, second shooting every weekend for some of our industry’s leading photographers, Migneon Marias, Basque Imagery, Christine Meintjes, Kikitography, Carla Antonia, Coba Photography, Julia Winkler, Martijn Roos - I’ve been really privileged to learn from the best!
My infatuation with weddings continued steadily as I worked for the top wedding blog in Cape Town at the time The Pretty Blog. Looking through countless wedding submissions of every kind and style I quickly learned how best to tell a couple’s stories through images.
Needless to say, I’ve been around the wedding block more times than I’ll likely admit, and still, I find myself swept away with emotions as a couple dedicate their lives to each other in love. It’s a sublime moment in time for me that I have the honour of documenting. I’m definitely leaving with a full heart (and full memory cards!)
However, things changed for me as the lockdown started in March 2020 in South Africa, mid planning my own wedding that was meant to take place in May. We all know how that turned out…
My (now) husband and I had to really go back to the basics of WHY…why do we want to get married, why do we want to make a big deal out of it, why are we SO fixated on the smallest material things?
After our 20-guest-back-garden-wedding somewhere between South Africa’s Lockdown Level 3.1.2 and Level 3.1.5 where we had one of the most intimate and incredibly powerful days of our lives (words still escape me), something shifted in my heart towards weddings.
To be honest, for a good week I thought that I never want to shoot another wedding again in my life because all the pretense and “show” that weddings have become have seriously distracted us from what stepping into a marriage means and why it was created. Thankfully my somber feelings didn’t last long as I realised that I’m not the only one who wanted my wedding to be more than pretty flowers and a WOW wedding dress (it can be all that too!) and that I could serve these couples by telling their stories with as much honesty and empathy as my little heart can handle.
I want to invite you into this same experience, where your wedding day becomes less of an event that fits your Pinterest board or surpasses your friend’s wedding extravaganza and more of the sacred celebration it really is. It’s the start of a life forever entangled with your favourite person - what could be better?!
